What would you choose? Relegation/Survival v FA Trophy Final Win/Loss

Post by Aldershot »

I think I know what the majority of you would choose but I thought it'd be interesting to see what people would favour...

It goes without saying people would like to stay up and win the trophy (obviously!) but if the choices were only out of the following two which would you choose?

Aldershot Town stay in the National League but are either eliminated by Woking in the SF or lose in the FA Trophy Final

OR...

Aldershot Town defeat Woking in the SF to reach Wembley for the first time and then win the FA Trophy Final but suffer relegation

I think most people would prefer staying up and no Wembley, the once a season day trip type’s would want Wembley then disappear back to their premier league teams

I think we’ll do both but it could very easily go the other way but if you’re someone who follows Aldershot and Newcastle you’ve killed a bird 🦅 with 2 stones

Survival. Every time, no question. Trophy run is nice, but is a bonus.

I have a genuine fear that we will lose to Fylde (as we always do) with one eye on Saturday, and whatever the result vs Woking will put in an "after the lord mayor's show" performance against a resurgent Boston, lose again, and BAM, we are right back in trouble.

I hope it doesn't happen

Stay up however i think we are safe as houses allready so the trophy final would be a Brucie bonus.

Honestly I din't think we even need to choose! We've had a fantastic run of gaining 20 points from 10 games where only Barnet took more over the same period, which I believe has all but secured our NL status. I'd even go as far as saying avoid defeat on Tuesday v Fylde on Tuesday then it's job done. Fylde would never make up 11 points on us with just six games left nor would Maidenhead make up 13, and with Wealdstone's run in looking horrendous I can't see them getting more than 51 points.
and Richard Walden puts the Shots 1-0 up against Man Utd

I think it would be disaster if we were relegated.

The cost to get back up would be immense and probably far more than the Club could afford.

In my opinion........

Survival all the way.

As much I'd love to see us at Wembley but no way if it ment going down.

Being relegated would just ruin it all for the day out at Wembley, imagine just sitting there probs losing to Rochdale knowing that we were playing nls next year.

No thank you.

Never understand this type of question. Be surprised if there's a correlation between a cup run and relegation.
Remember losing 7-0 to Bedford and we ended up 4th bottom.

I'll be in the minority and take Wembley as it would probably be a once in a lifetime opportunity to get there and we've been fortunate to stay up on the past

We’ll do both I reckon but if we mess about on Tuesday with the team selection and lose then if we go down then it’s pure stupidity I’m afraid

Re the last question, “Aldershot Town defeat Woking in the SF to reach Wembley for the first time and then win the FA Trophy Final but suffer relegation”. An immediate comparison that came to my mind is Wigan Athletic. In 2013 they won the FA Cup beating Man City but were relegated from the PL the same season. They now play in league 1 (division 3 in old money). Although it’s at a much higher level than us I wouldn’t want us to suffer a similar fate insofar as not getting back up. So, to me it’s avoid relegation and treat the Trophy as a bonus, whatever the outcome.

I would choose survival for sure as once you are relegated it can be very difficult to go up again and take a long time. Also we are still not safe whilst other teams can mathematically overtake us. No room for complacency. COYS.
