NL Cup - latest status

Post by RC-Moderator »

(This was asked on the HSC thread, so I moved it to its own thread)

Its knockout- but we dont know anymore yet (eg when , or who we get)
We dont know whether they will give NL clubs preference for home venue as per before

The ones where the NL clubs are in pole position:

- Aldershot
- Maidenhead (or Brighton U21)
- Braintree
- Altrincham or Rochdale (or Wolves U21) - decided 11-Feb
- Dagenham or Sutton (or Notts Forest U21) - decided tomorrow night

And then academies:

- Newcastle
- Leeds
- Man Utd
- (maybe Wolves/Forest or Brighton, as per above)

For us, our first obvious Tuesday without moving matches is March 11th, so would suggest our match will be then unless the other side is unavailable (eg Sutton, Rochdale/Altrincham have a league game that night). So be ready for some uproar when a league match gets moved around!

I expect the league would like 4 U21 sides to go through, as that is both a great story in terms of equity/balance; and would also allow for ALL the quarter finals to be NL side at home, versus U21 side.

Update from mdg : "I think I read somewhere that teams cannot be drawn against those from the same qualification group. So at least we don't have to go to Maidenhead twice this year ..."

The management team have a fantastic opportunity to cement contacts at these clubs particularly our Chairman. This could result in some loan signings next season.

If Nottingham Forest win at Sutton tomorrow, they will be the team to qualify from that group and if Maidenhead lose their last game badly they could let Brighton in.

Sutton progress…so above updated. Interesting overlap of us, Sutton, Rochdale and Altrincham in the Trophy and here.

I agree that this competition is a load of old tosh. But I also believe it's here to stay for a while, so we might as well go and try to win it and grab the associated prize money. It's hard to see anything other than a downward financial spiral for ATFC at the moment.

I have no doubt should Shots progress to the final in this competition or the HSC people will turn out for the final 🤣
