Against Modern Football
Against Modern Football
I realise I'm probably just an old man shouting at the clouds but I dislike the way football is going. It's been announced today that Newcastle United are going to update their club logo. With a move from St James' Park on the cards and the logo changing it makes you realise just how quickly a club can lose it's identity and history. The reason for the club wanting to change the logo makes me roll my eyes.
As our club grows on the global stage, the symbol that represents us needs to be able to keep pace. It needs to show up clearly and confidently across everything - from kits to screens to merchandise.
This isn't a decision we take lightly. We love our crest. It's iconic and has stood us through unforgettable triumphs and testing times. But it was created in a different era. Its intricate design doesn't always translate well in today's digital world. And it's difficult to reproduce it clearly and consistently.
As football and the world changes, so too must the symbol that unites us.
Minimalist designs have made so many brand logos look dull and identical but are touted as "modern".

Sunderland did it in 1998 and nobody cared
Re: Against Modern Football
That's because nobody cares about the SMBs

It seems a lot of clubs are doing it these days. I remember the Leeds United badge that was unveiled and after massive backlash they reversed the decision. The Juventus 'J' logo is another modern design that looks horrendous.

Top level football is ridiculous. They're getting to the point where a lot of people (mainly from around the world) follow players instead of clubs, where season ticket holders are a nuisance to premier division teams because they don't pay inflated prices or buy merch, it's so far from what this was all supposed to be. Just because you could charge £200 a seat, doesn't mean you should. And the fact that rich foreigners will pay this is daft anyway.
I always tell my son that football is meant to be dull most of the time, then it isn't and it's amazing. Part of going every week is to see all these ebbs and flows as well. But it's all about clips and moments now. People think that all the players are great all the time because that's what youtube makes it look like, but I've seen Ronaldo stand there like a scarecrow for 90 minutes...

Think people need to start moving with the times.
That includes ATFC going digital and taking all your contact details and bank details online and making you sign up for online accounts.
Guess what.... So they can market ATFC to you.
- Give you a 15% gift voucher on your birthday (or whatever date you chose to select on the system)
- See you haven't been to a match for a while and try to persuade you to return!
- Christmas voucher

Spot on. I blame social media for a lot of it. A lot of people these days are driven by 'likes' and crave online validation. They will jump on whatever is trending and going viral at the time. You get a lot of those types of people who will go to top flight games just to say they've been and try and gain some clout by paying top dollar even if they don't care about either side that is playing. People like that with no passion ruin the atmosphere. Of course the clubs don't care because they earn more money with daytrippers who will spend extra on a ticket and at the club shop.Silasgoldeen wrote: ↑Fri May 09, 2025 3:44 pm Top level football is ridiculous. I remember when Manchester United changed their logo and removed the words 'Football Club' because they thought it would increase brand awareness as a global entity, rather than just a football club. Who cares about history or football heritage when you might be able to make a bit more cash. Money over morals.

Re: Against Modern Football
We’ve done it three times in our existence that I can remember too..
Re: Against Modern Football
I think in the 1960s we had a heraldic style crest, which morphed into a cannon and then to the 1926 football logo. Similarly, our Phoenix has has a few modifications over the year, particularly with the colourisation/background.
Don’t think we can get too outraged.

Used to like the shiny stickers with club crests on them. Wonder if the new one will be generated by AI?

Speaking of which, I wonder if the club gets contact details for everyone who purchased a cup final ticket. Assuming not. But what a missed opportunity that is, 19,000 people going to watch your team and you don't have their data.Martin Patfield wrote: ↑Fri May 09, 2025 3:56 pm Think people need to start moving with the times.

Surely that should read ‘and you don’t have access to their data’.Silasgoldeen wrote: ↑Fri May 09, 2025 6:33 pmSpeaking of which, I wonder if the club gets contact details for everyone who purchased a cup final ticket.
