The Directors of Real Bedford FC and Bedford Town FC are excited to announce that discussions are in progress regarding a historic merger that has the potential to transform football in Bedford.

We are engaged in detailed negotiations to unify the two clubs into a single entity. There is
considerable work to be done, including navigating necessary governance processes and protocols, details of which will be shared in due course. As part of the proposed agreement, Peter McCormack would assume the role of Chairman of the
newly merged club, with Jon Taylor and Ben Banks continuing as Non-Executive Directors to provide guidance during the transition and drive the club’s future ambitions.

I think it's up to individual leagues. The Football League used to have such a rule. I don’t know if the EFL have retained it.
If the Southern were happy to let the merged club keep Bedford FC's place, I guess that's what would happen.

Logically, the lower level club doesn’t exist after the merger, so they cannot have gained a promotion.

Not sure quite how it worked, but Petersfield Town (which rose from the ashes of Petersfield Utd in 1993), merged with Petersfield Town Juniors, but still initially retained their Wessex League status. They have since dropped into a different league, the Southern Combination.

Even though they had similar names I think they had been separate clubs to all intents and purposes. One profound change was that the club changed their traditional Red and White kit to Blue and Yellow.

Of course, the Shots play their own part in the history of football in Petersfield with us providing a record crowd at Love Lane of 1615 attending in December Boin 1992 in the Isthmian League (we won 3-0)!
