Joint Statement Regarding Proposed Merger Between Real Bedford FC and Bedford Town FC
The Directors of Real Bedford FC and Bedford Town FC are excited to announce that discussions are in progress regarding a historic merger that has the potential to transform football in Bedford.
We are engaged in detailed negotiations to unify the two clubs into a single entity. There is
considerable work to be done, including navigating necessary governance processes and protocols, details of which will be shared in due course. As part of the proposed agreement, Peter McCormack would assume the role of Chairman of the
newly merged club, with Jon Taylor and Ben Banks continuing as Non-Executive Directors to provide guidance during the transition and drive the club’s future ambitions.
A Vision for Bedford Football
By combining the commercial success and global reach of Real Bedford with Bedford Town’s rich history, loyal fanbase, and infrastructure, this merger creates a powerful club able to compete at the highest levels in men’s and women’s football.
Peter McCormack has overseen rapid growth with Real Bedford, including consecutive promotions, innovative commercial strategies, and international awareness as well as the largest investment in a non-league club in history when US billionaires Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss invested £3.6m into the club.
Bedford Town’s proud history, established fanbase, and home at The Eyrie add depth, legacy, and community ties to this partnership. Together, the merged club will focus on achieving professional football status for both men’s and women’s football.

Re: Bedford FC
With all these clubs in the lower leagues receiving investment, we are seriously going to be left behind.
Re: Bedford FC
Isn't this just Real Bedford trying to grab a stadium, fan base and a jump up the pyramid?

Re: Bedford FC
100% yes, Bedford Town fans are absolutely fuming!
But expect them to fly up to NLS in no time.
Real's manager is ex-Shot Rob Sinclair.

Re: Bedford FC
Wasn’t/isn’t it the case that when two clubs from different levels merge then the newly created club has to start at the level of the lower club?

Depends on the majority shareholding situation I imagine

Re: Bedford FC
I’d have thought that it would be an FA or League ruling the purpose being to prevent a lower level club piggy-backing onto a higher level club to gain an unfair promotion.chimpster99 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 10:24 pmDepends on the majority shareholding situation I imagine

Re: Bedford FC
I think it's up to individual leagues. The Football League used to have such a rule. I don’t know if the EFL have retained it.Birdman wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 10:32 pmI’d have thought that it would be an FA or League ruling the purpose being to prevent a lower level club piggy-backing onto a higher level club to gain an unfair promotion.chimpster99 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 10:24 pmDepends on the majority shareholding situation I imagine
If the Southern were happy to let the merged club keep Bedford FC's place, I guess that's what would happen.
Re: Bedford FC
Logically, the lower level club doesn’t exist after the merger, so they cannot have gained a promotion.Birdman wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 10:32 pmI’d have thought that it would be an FA or League ruling the purpose being to prevent a lower level club piggy-backing onto a higher level club to gain an unfair promotion.chimpster99 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 10:24 pmDepends on the majority shareholding situation I imagine
Re: Bedford FC
Not sure quite how it worked, but Petersfield Town (which rose from the ashes of Petersfield Utd in 1993), merged with Petersfield Town Juniors, but still initially retained their Wessex League status. They have since dropped into a different league, the Southern Combination.
Even though they had similar names I think they had been separate clubs to all intents and purposes. One profound change was that the club changed their traditional Red and White kit to Blue and Yellow.
Of course, the Shots play their own part in the history of football in Petersfield with us providing a record crowd at Love Lane of 1615 attending in December Boin 1992 in the Isthmian League (we won 3-0)!
