Caretaker Manager (Again)

Post by steveshot »

We are slowly drifting into the relegation area, something needs to be done quickly. TW’s team is worse than last season and now we are looking down the plug hole.
Caretaker manager or make a decision time.

Well Tommy was in the dugout for the last 15 minutes last night, so a caetaker manager isn't going to be considered. It's decision time isn't it?

But this is Shahid. He has a long history of waiting too long to act in these situations. With both Searle and Molesley he allowed the managers to remain well past their sell-by dates and only acted when the fans turned their fury on him personally.

You know the score, Chimpster. When the heat lands on him he pulls the trigger in order to deflect.

In my opinion, I think we need to say thanks very much to TW, wish him all the best and try to pull a managerial blinder out the hat.

Personally, I'm done with TW and his tenure at the club. I enjoyed the best part of last season, but this season has been a complete shambles and the ongoing saga with Theo has damaged any remains of his reputation.
Tommy has literally used ATFC as a vehicle to play his son in the National League.

Sometimes directors find it difficult to make the deciscion to release the manager due to various factors. It could be personal relationships, lack of finance to cover the removal, not having the balls to do it / accepting past or future culpability.

For instance I was at the game V Southend at Roots Hall Tuesday 23rd October 2013. I had heard on the way to the match that the manager was going that evening DH having got 9 points from the opening 14 games. Danny Hylton scored in the opening minute and Sonny Bradley scored very late on for a Shots 2-1 win. The next day I was awaiting the news that the manager had gone but it never came. I spoke about a year later to the man who was meant to dismiss the manager and questioned what actually happened and was told " I didn't feel comfortable sacking the manager after an away win". The writing was on the wall for Dean after our capitulation at Torquay earlier in the month, but it just goes to show there are many reasons for not sacking or why a manager wasn't sacked at a given time.

Having all the attention focused on the manager and performances must be a relief for the board.

Makes them feel the fee they paid for Theo is justified

I’m still trying to get my head around a manager on sick leave showing up for 15 minutes of work.

Pedant alert: Wouldn’t that have been 2012? In 2013 we were back in The Conference.

Brian, that's a p1$$ poor reason you were given for not following through with the sacking of one of the worst managers we had had up to that point. Obviously, this limp character had never heard the phrase "courage of your convictions". You think reflectively, maturely and in the round about the best interests of the club, and if you decide they are best served by a change of manager, you follow through. You don't get derailed by a single out-of-the-blue win. Poorly managed clubs can still manage occasional wins. Happens all the time. One win does not make a successful team or successful manager. It's as obvious as the nose on your face.

In any event, when the awful braggart Holdsworth did finally get the chop, it was after a win anyway! Many posters on this site were (quite wrongly) critical of sacking a manager who had just won a game. I well recall posting on here at the time that they were way off beam. There is no bad time to sack a bad manager.

And as others have said, Shahid Azeem has form for delaying the inevitable.

Yes I remember how the players celebrated that night throwing shirts into the away end as if we'd been promoted, it frankly was embarrassing

I don't think there's anything peculiar or illegitmate about this in general. I well recall when I had been off work for several months following a botched operation that I worked my way back in very gradually. My first time back at work was for just half an hour when I was still officially on sick leave.

Where you may have a point is that I didn't take any momentous or far-reaching decisions or do anything of great consequence in that half hour ... nor did I until I was offically back off sick leave.

So you could reasonably argue that TW should not have been anywhere near influencing an inportant first team game in its vital, closing stages. Working your way back gradually might mean helping with training or doing a bit of paperwork before progressing to overseeing a league match.

I was on media duties for the club that night, and remember two guys walking in and taking their seats directly in front of me within two minutes of each other, sitting three seats apart. One was Andy Scott, and the other was John Sheridan! So it would appear word had got round that was going to be the case within the football circle too.

We'll never know now, but maybe had a decision been made around that time to part company with Dean Holdsworth, then we may have remained a Football League Club for the foreseeable future! Don't forget, when the directors decided to make the management change that season, it was after a 1-0 win against Torquay at home, so maybe a home win didn't mean as much as an away win?!

Making difficult decisions is never easy, but sometimes they have to be made for the greater good. It transpires that when the managerial decision was made that year, it didn't pay off, so maybe it should have been made in October 2012!
