Todays game is OFF

Re: Todays game is OFF
I was about to walk to the Rec as usual at 1.45 pm for my 45 min walk for the game today. As I was layering up clothes-wise I got a message from a friend telling me that the game was off - much appreciated! Sky Sports Super Saturday instead. As an aside I observe that this board is more polar in opinions than ever before. Very sad, still in the 37 years that I have supported the club that has almost always been the case. Picking on Richard Petty, in particular, who is a very sensible contributor on this board is very counter-productive, and needs to cease. I agree that the messages that the game was definitely on, without the say so of the one person who matters, the match referee, was very foolish. I am sure that lessons will be learnt.

It the whole thing stenny of how everything was smugly communicated that irks everyone . Oh look we don't need a pitch inspection etc etc . The covers go down to minus 4 well ĥere 5 miles away this morning it was minus 8.9 . The grassy areas in Aldershot were solid at midday . It was freezing again at 4pmStenhouse wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 8:43 pm I was about to walk to the Rec as usual at 1.45 pm for my 45 min walk for the game today. What do you mean you didn't. Read your own post that you have even included in your reply which I was replying to.
You personally have just stopped by your attitude my and my businesses sponsorship of the Club full stop. Be very proud!
This club I have loved since the 60's is so divided and if anyone dares to say anything that is off the rails they are jumped on.
I will not come the The Rec again nor post ever again on here......
I think he is being real. ..........what's wrong with full stops I love them.

Lower I agree with you. As I said the messages that the game was definitely on was foolish! As I was a Referee in the 70's to 90's it was always my decision if a game was on - nobody else's.lowerbourneshot wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 8:51 pmIt the whole thing stenny of how everything was smugly communicated that irks everyone . 54 is being tetchy and daft, Richard please ignore because for me you're the most sensible and respected poster on here.
Today has been a bad day for this club. We need a statement because either the ref was a nutjob or we got it completely wrong.

Fair play to him for apologising but valid point there and is the secretary responsible for the updates?lowerbourneshot wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 8:08 pmWorsened ? I can only apologise profusely to supporters and staff who made the long journey. The pitch was inspected yesterday with similar forecasts predicted overnight. Conditions worsened in the early hours unexpectedly. I’m sorry we did not get an earlier decision.

Shots54, I hope you will bear with me and forgive me if I point out to you the essential unreasonableness of your post.Shots1954 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 8:20 pm Well Richard, thank you!

You have had a point of disagreement with an individual, Richard Petty. Now most of us know Richard to be a very sensible and level-headed man, with the interests of the Shots and Shots supporters at heart. This business of the late postponement of today's match, after multiple messages that the game was in no doubt, has rightly annoyed and frustrated those who wasted time and money travelling. The temperature has been raised over this, and when that happens people are prone to express themselves and their feelings. This is normal. It is one of the functions of this board to allow people to vent their spleen. You see it all the time.
We should not fall out over such a matter. Are you a married man? Have you never had an argument with your wife? If not, you are surely unique. But you don't throw your marriage away and walk out because you don't see eye to eye on every single matter. You give it time, and the breach heals.
As I said, Richard is an individual. Be annoyed and angry at Richard as much as you want. But, and here's where the unreasonableness that I mentioned comes in, you cannot and should not mistake Richard as a single individual for the whole of ATFC, the team, the management, the board, the supporters, the caterers, ... The club is much bigger than one individual.
I think you are quite wrong in saying that "if anyone dares to say anything that is off the rails they are jumped on". People can and do post what they like. Some of it is pretty whacky, but most of it is simply good people's honest feelings and opinions. There is no mafia mandating what can and cannot be said. I have not seen that.
Walking away from the club that you have loved since the 60's because of a straightforward angry exchange with one person over one regrettable incident is cutting off your nose to spite your face. You are the loser. As I say, give it time and breaches can heal.

Re: Todays game is OFF
To me the problem today was last week. Last week they didn't get covers down in time but managed to turn things around. The ref was sympathetic and by hook or by crook they got where they needed to get.
This week they had covers down in time and, having succeeded in getting the game on last week, thought that everything would be okay. And the ground was seemingly in good nick this morning.
So it seems likely that last week's success probably led to this week's over-confidence.
Then the new ref turned up and - as is his right - decided that he wasn't happy with the pitch.
We might infer from the tone of the club's message "the ref has turned up and called it off" (or words to that effect) that the club weren't very pleased with this, but that's just my assumption, having left just after 11 with everyone content that the game was on.
I'd be interested to know if the area in front of the South Stand was worse than last week or whether the ref just wasn't prepared to give the game a chance.
Whatever. I'm sure there'll be a bit of a review within the club. Whenever this sort of thing happens it seems like fans default to assuming that the people involved are idiots, which plainly isn't the case. But yeah, to me it seems like the club got caught out either a) by two refs having different interpretations, or b) the area in front of the South Stand not thawing as quickly as expected, or maybe both. They could have taken the easy way out (along with the rest of the division) and just called the game off yesterday, but in trying hard to give us all a game of football they've ended up with egg on their face. Live and learn.
