Playing out from the back
There has often been debate on here about the pros and cons of teams playing out from the back with short pass goal kicks etc...
I have just read this article on BBC Sport that is quite interesting and contains some good analysis which although focused on the Premier League would I am sure be mirrored in stats for teams at our level. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/ar ... 3z0wx3x54o
Thought I would share the article on here

The old saying goes "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you will never please all the people all the time." In fact sometimes it seems impossible to even please some of the people any of the time
Re: Playing out from the back
We don’t have a choice. Welting the ball up the pitch to the unfortunate Jack Barham is tantamount to lunacy.
Seriously, at our level, the basic technical inabilities of some in defensive positions make for an interesting match. It’s fashionable, I guess…

Re: Playing out from the back
yeah we had that terrible spell where we played three non-passers at the back and we were horrific. Defences knew we couldn't play through them so just stood off and we had no way to move the ball up the pitch, so you had those awful sequences of the ball being recycled across the back line then eventually just being lumped. This is the Odegaard bit in the article I guess.
I remain convinced that the turnaround in form came when they started playing Scott and to a lesser extent Jones back there. We were conceding goals with the out and out defenders anyway but this gives us a much better footing in the game. Teams can't just sit off now so there are knock on effects that ripple all the way up the pitch.

Re: Playing out from the back
What the stats need to show is the amount of goals conceded through losing the ball close in.

Watch out for Tamworth in a few weeks playing with central defenders with that build.Silasgoldeen wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 4:51 pm yeah we had that terrible spell where we played three non-passers at the back and we were horrific. The best part about playing out from the back is
When they lose the ball, and they get caught and get punished…/ concede a goal
Most enjoyable
Yet 2 minutes later, they are doing exactly same thing again
Southampton have conceded about 9 goals playing this

Yes I agree with you, it’s absolutely pathetic and Fraser Forster messed up not once but twice against Manchester United the other week, I first noticed this nonsense football when the premier league resumed in June 2020 during the pandemicshots1965 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 1:13 am The best part about playing out from the back is

It has its place and it doesnt.....If you analysed how the old Wimbledon played just get it in the box it served them well
Use both forms your laughing the skill set of a player is play in every position then you have a master team. You cover when players are caught out. What English football needs is coaches who let players run at people take them on. Not this sideways backwards crap.
At Aldershot we certainly have one player that has no pace ,no skill, no heading ability no tackling ability. Not sure quite how he plays at our level. Yet he will go backwards and sideways for the sake of it not because of keeping the ball. Which gives us nothing.
That's my opinion we concentrate to much on it coming out from the back instead of using players individual skill. Too many crap players can get away with passing sideways and backwards for no advantage to the team.
Saying the above Ray Wilkins was a fantastic player who was refereed to at Chelsea as the " crab" though he was a master. Rip Ray.

I agree, the amount of stick Raymond got was unfortunate and a bit unfair!Rba wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 8:51 am It has its place and it doesnt.....If you analysed how the old Wimbledon played just get it in the box it served them well

City's 4th goal just another example. What were Salford doing?

The sooner lower level clubs dump the manual the better, they do not have the ability to make it work.lowerbourneshot wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 7:05 pmFollowing the way the coaching manual says they have to play
