Pat Nash
Re: Pat Nash
Bit bigger of course, but Cheltenham isn’t the sort of place that you might expect a “Proper” club either!
Farnham was, of course, too posh for a Kentucky Fried Chicken which only lasted a couple of years from about 1983 to 1985 in the Borough.

Wetherspoon opening in the near future. How will that go down?
Re: Pat Nash
That’s the old “Slug & Lettuce” isn’t it? Replacing like for like realistically, and don’t forget Haslemere had a Wetherspoons once!redblueuptoyou wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 10:04 pmWetherspoon opening in the near future. How will that go down?
Farnham still hasn’t go any of the big names fast food restaurants, and I don’t think they will as it probably doesn’t fit in with the way the town wants to be. That cheeky little number 3 x miles up the road called Aldershot is a different story!
The Farnham KFC was a brave experiment, but long since consigned to history. Shame, as it was good!
Re: Pat Nash
No McDonalds either, I can vaguely remember some negotiations years ago, a proposed compromise involving a green M decal rather than a red, but no go. The present Waitrose was originally to be an Asda, I believe. Very abrupt refusal involving the council.
Perhaps McD’s can be welcomed into the new Brightwell white elephant development…

I think the original plan was to have it at the services on the bypass.karlready wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 10:40 pmNo McDonalds either, I can vaguely remember some negotiations years ago, a proposed compromise involving a green M decal rather than a red, but no go. I do think it's quite nice that Farnham has managed to keep the fast food chains out. Farnham has some very nice restaurants especialy in Lion and Lamb Yard that make the town a popular destination for eating out. Seeing the golden arches as you drive into the town would detract from its character.karlready wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 10:40 pmNo McDonalds either, I can vaguely remember some negotiations years ago, a proposed compromise involving a green M decal rather than a red, but no go. A bit like the McDonalds by the Great Pyramid in Giza, just wrong.
The old saying goes "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you will never please all the people all the time." In fact sometimes it seems impossible to even please some of the people any of the time

An illustration of why Farnham is no football town. The image ( and reality ) of football doesn’t pass muster.Richard Petty wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 11:00 pmI do think it's quite nice that Farnham has managed to keep the fast food chains out. From someone who is a Farnham boy, it’s not the town it once was. It hasn’t got worse, it’s just changed. Years ago it had a good few pubs where friends from surrounding area could meet up, the Hop bag was one, then there was the royal deer, William cobbett to name a few others.Fuggletim wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 10:35 pmThat’s the old “Slug & Lettuce” isn’t it? The fact that it once had a KFC that failed, was not due to lack of use. Farnham FC for years had alway hobbled along in the shadows of the old AFC, they now have a chairman who is ambitious for the club & is putting it the foundations for that ambition to bear fruit, as a Farnham boy, I wish them well.
In my humble opinion..Just saying
Re: Pat Nash
Thought the William Cobbet was still there? Hop Bag was a good pub and so was the Marlborough Head. You just knew when they refurbed the Seven Stars and Waverley Arms they were going to close!Graham Stovold wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 9:49 amFrom someone who is a Farnham boy, it’s not the town it once was. That KFC was really busy, but it did not fit with the town and I think life was made hard. I used to have a few pints in the Queens Head on a Thursday and then pop over. When my other half (before we got married) lived in Midhurst it was always slightly further to go to the Farnham KFC than the Chichester one, but the former was far superior.
Said it before on here that FTFC have got their model right. A tie up with Brewdog in their 2 x bars is a masterstroke as an example, but Farnham will always be constrained by the very obvious limits of the Memorial Ground. I believe there is a covenant on any potential sale with Heineken (who now are responsible, many takeovers later, of the old Farnham United Breweries) which goes back to when the club was formed in 1906 and the “donation” (for want of a better word) of the ground by the brewery.

Re: Pat Nash
You’re quite correct Tim, the Cobbet is still there, I was merely reflecting on the decent pubs we had in the Town back in the day. With the demise of pubs,it looks like the town has gone down the ‘Coffee culture’ route judging from the amount of these establishments in the town.Fuggletim wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 10:32 amThought the William Cobbet was still there? Good to see the likes of Goodridges still going though, good family run shop where you get great service.

Re: Pat Nash
It’s almost unheard of, but a couple of pubs have opened in Farnham in the last few years, including “The Castle” and obviously in October “The Tellers Arms”, so it is not all negative on the pub front in the town. “The Queens Head” has always been my favourite because of its Gales heritage, and in fact was one of the most geographically North pubs they had from their Horndean base (think they had at least one in Farnborough too).
Re: Pat Nash
For those of you that aren’t yet familiar with ‘The Tellers Arms’ it’s occupying the ‘recently’ closed Lloyd’s Bank branch in Castle Street.Fuggletim wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 1:19 pm It’s almost unheard of, but a couple of pubs have opened in Farnham in the last few years, including “The Castle” and obviously in October “The Tellers Arms”, so it is not all negative on the pub front in the town. “The Queens Head” has always been my favourite because of its Gales heritage, and in fact was one of the most geographically North pubs they had from their Horndean base (think they had at least one in Farnborough too).

Trouble is, I put my card in the machine but got 8 x pints of bitter and a packet of dry roast peanuts instead of £50!Birdman wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 3:15 pmFor those of you that aren’t yet familiar with ‘The Tellers Arms’ it’s occupying the ‘recently’ closed Lloyd’s Bank branch in Castle Street.Fuggletim wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 1:19 pm It’s almost unheard of, but a couple of pubs have opened in Farnham in the last few years, including “The Castle” and obviously in October “The Tellers Arms”, so it is not all negative on the pub front in the town. “The Queens Head” has always been my favourite because of its Gales heritage, and in fact was one of the most geographically North pubs they had from their Horndean base (think they had at least one in Farnborough too).
